She’s precise. Or maybe on her best behaviour. When she eats her rolls, she stops mid-sentence, hand on mouth in a symbolic ‘excuse me’, and gives the flying fish roe the covert respect it deserves. When I’m finished with an edamame pod, she gently pushes a hand towel towards me. And as we begin our afternoon chat, she leans her pliable self forwards. “Okay. Before we start, I just want to say something. I’m not from Ipoh.” Then she giggles, like she’s apologising for the existence of bad Googlers. Apparently, she’s done interviews in the past year that seem to think her second-ever stage production, The Girl from Ipoh, indicated that she was, in fact, a girl from Ipoh.
