Shrek The Musical coming to town soon and Soo is eager to watch it

By KENNETH CHAW
entertainment@thestar.com.my

PETALING JAYA: Local celebrity Carmen Soo is ogre-whelmingly excited about watching Shrek The Musical, which opens in Kuala Lumpur in less than two weeks.
“I am a huge fan of the animated movie, so I'm excited to see how the show will come to life. I am also excited to finally meet the characters in person,” said the model and actress.
While the fairytale-based story is a dream come true for children, the musical is no less appealing to adults, thanks to its impressive combination of a witty script, stunning special effects and timeless music.
Fairytale goes live: Soo (inset) is excited to see the much-feared
ogre Shrek, the singing donkey and the beautiful Princess Fiona
live in action
Soo, who will be going to the show with fellow model and actress Elaine Daly, said anyone who has watched the original 2001 animated feature would know that even adults can relate to its theme.
“It sends out a positive message, that one should not be judged by their physical appearance, as people can have a good heart in spite of the way they look,” she said.
Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and lyricist David Lindsay-Abaire, Shrek The Musical tells the tale of a big-hearted green ogre, who is despised by many due to his unsightly appearance, only to win the heart of the beautiful Princess Fiona.
Kuala Lumpur-based singer Rozz agreed, saying that what she is most excited about are the 19 original songs composed by the award-winning Jeanine Tesori featured in the show.
“There is one song that I really like, Freak Flag (performed by the fairytale characters). I cannot wait to hear it live.
“The fact that the musical is playing to rave reviews in London's West End shows that it is not just for children, but it is also something everyone and anyone can enjoy,” she added.
Brought in by Yvents!, Shrek The Musical will be staged at Plenary Hall, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, from June 19-24.
Tickets, priced at RM190, RM290, RM390, RM490 and RM590 (excluding RM3 ticketing fee), are available from TicketsPeople at 03-2287 2727, ticketspeople.com or at the information counter at Bangsar Village, Kuala Lumpur.
The show is supported by the Tourism Ministry and Malaysian Convention and Exhibition Bureau, with The Star as a media partner.
HSBC credit cardholders enjoy a 10% to 15% discount on tickets.

Tonight at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium, the Philippine Azakals will have Filipina actress Angel Locsin on their side while the equally ravishing Carmen Soo roots for the Malaysian Tigers during the friendly match.

“I will support them all the way,” she said.
Rather curiously she added, "I will support them in spirit, and hopefully, physically as well."
Although it is a friendly game, Malaysian coach Datuk Rajagobal said they are not going to take it easy against the Azkals.
“They’re [Azkals] progressing very well and I respect them. But I don’t want my players to fear them,” he said.
The Azkals led by brothers Phil and James Younghusband, will use the friendly match to hone their defensive patterns before leaving for Nepal for the Challenge Cup this Friday.
“It will give us a clear view of our defensive shape, which we’ve been working on in Dubai (recent training camp), said Azkals team coach Michael Weiss.

Carmen Soo wants to keep mum on real score between her and Lino Cayetano

Push This
101211-carmen1_main.jpgAfter arriving in the country last week, Malaysian actress Carmen Soo said she is currently on a short break from her showbiz commitments in other Asian countries. Push.com.ph caught up with pretty model-host at the recent Star Magic Catalogue autograph-signing after party held at the Cav Wine Bar last October 9 at Bonifacio High Street.

“I’ve been away for six months. It’s really, really nice to come back again. In the last few years since I first started coming to the Philippines, I always come back at least once every few months. Except for last year when I was here for nine months. So this time, I’ve been away for six months and I realized I really missed the Philippines because I still have my stuff here, I still got my friends and my work. So it’s good to come back here for just a little break, just to see everyone, have a pictorial and I have guestings coming up. I’m just really grateful to be back again even though it’s a very, very short trip,” she shared.

Carmen admitted she has had her hands full this year doing a lot of projects in the Southeast Asian region. “Actually the last few months have been really hectic so it’s just really about work. I’m just trying to find time to see my family in the meantime. I was doing a movie in Malaysia and also a TV series in Singapore. It was a reality show and I played a mentor for a search for new models. So I was juggling these so it’s a little bit too much so I’m kind of on a break for just a few days. I’m going to be here only for a few more days. It’s my birthday this weekend so ideally I want to be home with my family and all that,” she shared.

The former Wowowee co-host, who is continually being linked to director Lino Cayetano after they had been seen together in public on various occasions, still refused to give any specific details regarding the extent of their relationship. “We were definitely spotted together for sure. But anything more, I think there is no need to talk about it. Sorry! (laughs). I don’t want to talk about that. I think if you know, I don’t really talk about personal stuff so I’d rather don’t want to comment about it,” she said.

The actress admitted she has always been a private person despite her celebrity status. “I think the first time when I came to the Philippines, obviously there were a lot of speculation, there was a lot of questions about what goes on privately between the actors which I think was a little bit too invasive and I just sort of make it a point in the beginning that I think things are a private for a reason so it should stay private. Unless I’m getting married, then okay I’ll say it,” she explained.

Carmen said when she is in the country, she looks forward to catching up with friends and former workmates from Star Magic. “In many ways, I think showbiz in the Philippines works differently to begin with. So how they manage me is also different. It’s something I’ve already adjusted to. Actually there’s a few people in the Star Magic family that I’m very close to that I consider my family. So every time I come back, I will always meet them. We always have kuwento-kuwento and kain-kain, so we’re going to do that this week. So Tita Mariole (Alberto) and Mr. M (Johnny Manahan) take good care of me. And they always make sure that I’m okay. So I’m very happy. I just wish I could divide my body into two. So that I can be in Malaysia and the Philippines (laughs),” she added.

Carmen says that even though she is leaving sometime this week she is trying to squeeze in time for everybody close to her. “I want to see my friends here. I’m close to them, people that I’ve worked with like Cristine Reyes, Christian Bautista, Jericho Rosales, Maricar Reyes, Bettina Carlos, Nikki Gil, Valerie Concepcion, and Kelly Misa. So these people have become my friends and of course there are also people behind-the-scenes like the producers and the directors who I kept in touch with. So every time I come here I will try to text all of them, arrange breakfast, lunch, dinner so that I can see all of them if I can. Besides that, some of my favorite restaurants are here so every time I’m here I want to eat at this place. I miss the food. I have to go back to all these favorite restaurants. They are Filipino, Japanese, they’re like breakfast places, cafes and stuff. I have memories in those places so when I come back I like to go back there,” she said.

Historical treasures and hundred year old human skulls still hang in the almost untouched equatorial virgin rainforests native homes, in this the notorious tribal land of the Head-hunters. Locals known for their supernatural prowess, bravery and fighting abilities to survive had been at uncountable wars, ending always with enemy skulls brought back home as trophies. The head-hunters live by the hundreds under one common roof. They wear exquisite tribal tattoos over their bodies, intricate woven cloth, produce practical tools, and arts dedicated nature. Blood, gore and sex from The Hunter

By CHEW WAN YING

From what we’ve gathered, it’s not just the director that’s seeking a breakthrough. The characters in the film sound like a great departure from the actresses’ usual roles, too.

For one, Soo, who is seen in local films like The 3rd Generation, Visits: Hungry Ghost Anthology and more recently, in Philippine productions like A Love Affair, is playing a character unlike the glamorous model we know.

Soo said: “I play a stern and ambitious director who is so focused on her work that she doesn’t think about anything else. However, as the plot thickens, she will slowly reveal different sides of herself.

“Thankfully, in my line, I’ve worked with many directors. I think I’m going to have fun playing the role and slowly losing the Carmen Soo side of me.

“We will be filming in the rainforest. So we are not going to be in dresses, heels and make-up. Bjarne warned us to be prepared for a lot of running, falling down as well as getting dirty. There’ll be no time for vanity.”

In fact, Soo first checked her vanity at the door when she was required to play a disfigured character in 2004’s Visits.

“When I first started in my career, due to my modelling background, I was concerned about looking nice. As I go along I try to put that aside because it gets in the way of (portraying) your character. For the movie to work, it’s whether you look right or not,” she noted.

Soo-perstar!

Cinema Online – June 14, 2011

Carmen Soo Wai Mun, or more popularly known as Carmen Soo among her Malaysian fans, has reportedly appeared in over a dozen commercials and had co-starred alongside Taiwanese actress Shu Qi, in the 1999 Jackie Chan movie, "Gorgeous". She then went on the star in the Filipino teleseries "Kahit Isang Saglit", which garnered her star status in the Philippines as the first and only Malaysian actress who has appeared in a Filipino TV series.

The actress who will now star in Bjarne Wong's upcoming horror movie "The Hunter", as one of the leads alongside Sharifah Amani, Tavani Hu, Lou Qi, Soo Wincci and more, speaks on her upcoming role and the expectations of shooting in the jungles of Borneo next month.

Interview conducted recently at "The Hunter" press conference at Movie Carnival 2011, IPC Shopping Centre.

Q: Hi Carmen, will "The Hunter" be your first horror/thriller movie?
Actually no, the first horror film I did is a short film titled "Visits". "Visits" combines four short films into one. I took part in one of them and played a ghost. However, it will be quite different for "The Hunter" as I am basically switching roles to play the victim instead.
Q: What are the preparations like before you start shooting for your role?
In this film, I play the role of the director that is conducting a shooting in the jungle. So my homework is to understand and observe a director's work, their attitude, as well as how they behave towards their actors on set. Of course, I want to play my own character because not all directors are the same, so I aim to bring something different to the role.
Q: So, any must have items you must bring into jungle?
Yes absolutely, mosquito repellant and also something to prevent snakes! I am very scared of snakes. (laughs)
Q: How do you feel about acting in the wilderness of the Borneo jungle?
Normally for actors, we go through all kinds of risky conditions and experiences, but I won't say that this is the worst experience I'll ever have. It's true that it will be somewhat hard to go through all of this, but the good thing for us is that we need not worry about appearances because we are supposed to get dirty in the jungle.
Q: What do you think about the other actors you will be working with?
Well, I have acted with Sharifah Amani before. I know Soo Wincci for quite some time but we never acted together. Also, it is my first time acting with Tavani Hu and Lou Qi. So, this film has a lot of familiar people and also new people as well, but I guess they are the same and we will work well together.
Q: Thank you for your time Carmen, all the best to you.
Thank you so much!
"The Hunter" is expected to be released in Malaysia and Singapore sometime next year.

Show: Malaysia’s first 3-D movie

Director Bjarne Wong is back in his element with a horror flick featuring a star-studded cast. And it will be in 3-D too, writes DENNIS CHUA
HIS last film, Sayang You Can Dance, starring Indonesian heartthrob Samuel Rizal and the bankable Sharifah Amani, bombed at the box office but Kuching-born director Bjarne Wong is not one to believe in jinxes.

“When a film does not do well, it certainly hurts, but that does not stop me from trying again, with different stories that strike a chord with viewers,” he says.

“Sayang You Can Dance was a romantic story and slight tear-jerker, and perhaps viewers have watched similar stories. But my latest project is a scare fest with a difference.” His new film, produced by Asia Entertainment Media, is The Hunter. It will go down in local film history as the country’s first 3-D production on the big screen.

Filming will start this month, in Kuching, Serian, Sibu and other major towns in Sarawak. Wong hopes to wrap it up in 45 days.

“The RM6 million project is set in the Borneo rainforest. We’ve got state-of-the-art South Korean technology for the 3-D effects and fight scenes that I executed with tips from Hong Kong’s Stanley Tong,” says Wong.

The film, in Mandarin, Cantonese, English and Malay, is about a group of documentary filmmakers who are stalked by a mysterious force in the jungle.

A joint production of China, Taiwan and Malaysia, it stars Chinese actor Rocky Lou Qi (Bodyguards And Assassins), singer-actresses Cindy Chen and Soo Wincci, Taiwanese model-actress Tavani Hu, and Malaysian actors Isaac Ong, Carmen Soo, Koe Yeet, Sharifah Amani and Wong’s brother, Smith. It will be released middle of next year in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei and the Philippines.

Lou, who plays the protagonist, a gentlemanly photographer, says: “I’m looking forward to seeing my first Malaysian project succeed at the box office. I’ve even promised my co-stars that I’ll show off my six-pack then!” Chen, who plays a mischievous actress, says it is her second film with Wong. The first was Possessed, made five years ago.

“Originally, I was not the female lead, but the production team decided otherwise. It’s a great opportunity to work with some of the country’s brightest new stars, especially Amani, not to mention Tavani and Rocky.” Ong, a model and nutritionist from Malacca, plays a playboy who shares passionate moments with Hu’s character.

“I was rather shy about doing such scenes, but Bjarne tactfully helped me get there,” he says of his movie debut experience.

Hu, who has acted in TV shows in the last four years, says: “I’m happy to star in my first Malaysian film because I’ve always believed in having an all-star East Asian movie, preferably a horror flick.”

Carmen, who plays a no-nonsense director, says every character has a pivotal role in the story’s direction, positively or otherwise.

“The Hunter is a story-within-a-story, and that makes it an interesting watch. There are no real good and bad guys, everybody has issues and strengths, and my character is different this time,” she says.

Koe, who plays Carmen’s younger sister, says: “My character is less of a sweetie than in Homecoming. She is mischievous and some of the things she does lands the cast and crew in trouble.” Smith, who is also the show’s image consultant, says it is his fourth film with his brother. “I play Tong, a laid-back man. He and Cindy’s character do not get along, but he loves her,” he says.

Amani, who starred in Wong’s Possessed with Amber Chia, plays Annie, a tour guide for the actors, who is based in Kuching.
“It’s always a pleasure to work with Bjarne and Smith as they encourage us to develop our characters. While I’m playing a Sarawak girl again after Sayang You Can Dance, Annie is different, and she gets bloodied!” Wincci, who sings the film’s theme song, Scary, says: “My character is the irritating, nasty one. She is the documentary film host who has problems in her life. It’s an honour to not only star in my first major movie, but also to write and sing its theme song.” The film was launched at Ikano Power Centre in Mutiara Damansara, Petaling Jaya, recently. Also present was its executive producer Dr Nixon Yap.

The mall's marketing communication manager, Wendy Wong, said that through the "Model Search" and "Charity Fashion Show", everyone can be a model for a good cause.

At the function, celebrities like Amber Chia, Elaine Daly, Carmen Soo, Peter Davis and Hansen Lee took to the runway and were role models to their wanna-bes.
They paraded in clothing and footwear by Esprit, Rockport and Forever 21.

Soo said she was glad to be able to join the Vogue for Virtue.

"It is wonderful that all of us are able to come together to do something important.

"In unity, there's strength," she added.

Daly said she was pleased to do her part for charity.

The function also gave her a chance to be in Penang to meet her fans and taste the local hawker food.

Present were State Tourism Development and Culture Committee chairman Danny Law Heng Kiang and Queensbay Mall's marketing communications manager Wendy Wong.
